Rugby League Around the Grounds
First points went to Greece early, which was off the back of a sweeping set play that resulted in Adam Vrahnos crossing the line, with the goal converted by Sam Stratis.
Soon after, the game was delayed as Greece’s winger, Tyrone Taukamo, was unfortunately injured, which stopped play temporarily.
After the teams return Vanuatu looked strong, making a break down the touchline though the pass went astray, yet it was knocked on by Greece.
Vanuatu were able to apply some pressure off the repeat sets, though Greece’s defense worked hard and did not show any cracks, leading to errors from the Vanuatu side.
In another difficult turn of events the match was again stopped due to an injury, this time to Vanuatu’s five-eighth, Alehana Mara.
Vanuatu seemed flustered when they returned to the field, making two errors in quick succession.
As Greece dominated field position, an awesome wide pass from Tremaine Terzis sent the winger down the sideline and then a nice draw and pass allowed George Tsikrikas to score.
Sam Stratis converted the try, taking the score to 12-0.
Greece put a real dent in Vanuatu’s confidence, scoring a crucial last try of the half thanks to a long cutout ball which saw Mitchell Zampetides cross in the corner, though the score remained 16-0 as the conversion was missed.
The second half starts in somewhat of a frantic fashion, though it quickly settles down as both teams began to complete their sets.
Greece eventually managed to break through the Vanuatu defensive line off a line break from dummy half, with Vanuatu fullback Stephen Tanga making a sneaky one-on-one strip to save the day.
A Vanuatu mistake returned the ball to Greece in attacking territory and they made no mistake, with Peter Mamouzelos scoring off a darting run from dummy half which followed a quick play the ball.
Sam Statis stretched the lead to 22-0 after converting the goal.
Greek fullback Laurence Zarounas grabbed himself a try after breaking through from an inside play, dummying to beat the fullback and running the distance to score.
Sam Stratis converted to make it 28-0.
Greece pounced again as Clinton Hughes scored from dummy half, which was largely attributed to a barnstorming run upfield from Staganos Bastas on the previous play.
Sam Stratis was successful with the conversion, taking the lead to 34-0
Greece then scored one final try for the match with 5 minutes remaining, thanks to a well-placed grubber kick from Peter Mamouzelos, which was gathered by Terry Constantine for the try on the right edge.
The conversion attempt was missed and the score remained 38-0 at the end of the match,
